• Earthquake relief works

In April and May of 2015 a series of earthquakes struck the Himalayan region of Shindupachuk. This area while close to the capital Kathmandu  it is still largely undeveloped due to accessibility.

In response the Himalayan Foundation have concentrated their efforts on the village of Guncha, located approximately 60 km north of Kathmandu  where  45 people lost their lives and 65 more were injured. Socigraphically Guncha is home to approximately 645 families with the average size being seven, children, parents and grandparents included. The local economy revolves around farming, however due to the terrain it is only possible to grow enough for themselves so yearly income is low at $500 USD per family.  For economic growth family members migrate to neighboring countries, particularly India to seek employment at the age of eighteen years.

Educationally the children are at a deficit, while all government and privet schools within Nepal follow a strict curriculum the local school provides classes one to eight.  The average student leaves after class five. For future studies leading to greater employment opportunities it is necessary to attend up to class 10 and pass the SLC (school leaving certificate) exam.  However this requires sufficient funding, an area Himalayan Foundation hopes to expand in with the child sponsorship program.

• Guncha  - what’s happened since the earthquake with your help through the support of the Himalayan Foundation

In response to the earthquake the immediate action undertaken was to provide tempory shelter. This was a hazardous procedure due to the road being nonexistent closely followed b y the start of the monsoon. Difficulty of access was a largely contributing factor resulting in this area receiving little aid from the lager organizations. However with your support we were able to provide the following resources:

Things have been challenging due to the fuel prices, and this has had an adverse effect on the rebuild of the earthquake affected zones to date.

The long term plan for Guncha 2016 -  

Our first priority is a Better Toilets Program  as an initiative of the VDP (village Development Program)

Since the April 2015 no permanent toilets have been established in Guncha and several of the surrounding villages. As a result a large number  of people displaced from homes face health risks for themselves, while polluting the mountain environment used primarily as agricultural land.  

The VDP typically involves the construction of four safe public toilets per allocated funding.

 Our immediate  aims are:

-          3 allocations of funding providing 12 public toilets in Guncha

-          Repairing the local school toilet

-          Reach outlying villages, Cotgow and Lekharhe with one VDP allocation respectively.

To undertake these projects we need sufficient funding with each allocation for construction requiring $450 USD. Upon receiving founding construction is commenced and supervised by the village leaders.

•  We aim to extend the aid we      can provide to education of building methods and construction of   new more earthquake safe housing. This involves replacing the traditional stone dwellings with those that utilize tie rods corner reinforcing and better foundations. This is a large project in need of sufficient founding, with approximately $5,000 USD needed to complete a first floor dwelling.

•  Putting children back in school – Himalayan Foundation aim to help provide the school needs of 25 children who have lost their homes due to earthquake damage through sponsorship.

•  Volunteering with the children’s actives

• ·Child sponsorship  - community poor family sponsorship.

• ·New tempory housing and Orphanage building

Tempory housing – simple tin construction for the short term use of displaced families .

-          The current orphanage building is rented for 40,000 Rs per month excluding utilities.

-          Land has been purchased

However, having a home is more important. As I’ve said I’m a Christian pastor and I spent a lot of my time in some small villages Guncha, Sindhupalchowk District which are located a six  hours drive from Kathmandu. The people in the villages are the ones who have suffered the most from the earthquake. Their houses were the first to crash and they are the last to receive help.  Because they live in areas where tourists don’t visit and the government doesn’t have the resources to support them.  I’ve been visiting these villages for years and it breaks my heart to see them suffer. That’s why I kindly ask you for donations to help rebuild this lesser known part of Nepal.

There are 586 families and almost all of them are have lost their homes and are forced to live in small cowsheds. In 1 cowshed of 15 m2 you can easily find a family of 4 to 5 people. This small room is both their kitchen and bedroom. Their toilet is outside. And usually the tin-roof isn ‘t      waterproof. Each small proper house that we will build will cost around 1.200 USD and we’d like to build at least 25 small houses.  – 30.000 USD in total.  It’s probably a bit too much to ask for. But either way you can look at it this way. 1.200 USD equals 1 house. And then We’ll see how far we’ll get. Himalayan Foundation Volunteer programs

The Himalayan Foundation Nepal (HFN). is an officially registered non-government organization (Regd. No. 935) associated with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal (Regd. No. 24693). Himalayan Foundation Nepal started providing , food, support, shelter, sponsoring and education for underprivileged children within orphaned, street and communities children in Kathmandu and other areas of Nepal in 2005. Many children have had traumatic and tragic experiences as a result of the loss of their parents, much of which is due to the 10 year political war in Nepal. Since we have opened, we have managed to more than triple the amount of orphans in our care and plan to help many more.
Over the years, our work has expanded to include working with disadvantaged women to create new opportunities of generating income for themselves and their families, partnering with local schools to assist with teaching English, health and human trafficking awareness-raising activities, and community-building activities in Kathmandu, Chitwan and other areas of Nepal, Nepal is still a very underdeveloped country and needs developmental help in a wide range of areas.
Our organization also hosts volunteers, providing people from around the world with the opportunity to experience the real Nepal, staying with a local host family while assisting us in overcoming the challenges created by extreme poverty and disadvantage. Every volunteer makes a unique contribution, and our volunteers are able to work with us to structure their, volunteer experience following their interests and making the most of the skills and knowledge they have to offer.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear : Friends

Greetings to you from your big family in Nepal with HFN.  I hope you are well.  Mariya, all the children and myself would like to wish you a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year.

We have decided to write a newsletter to update you on our past year, as for some of you it will have been some time since you last visited.

This year we have had 15 volunteers come and stay with us.  They have all been great and we have enjoyed getting to know them all.  They have come from Australia, France, Germany, Switzerland, U.S.A and the UK.  Previously, we have also have also had volunteers from Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Macedonia, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada,  New Zealand, Portugal, Italia  and the Netherlands.

We are so grateful to how people from all around the world have come together in our home and have given up their time, shared their talents and resources for a good and worthwhile cause.  Your financial generosity has been such a help and blessing to us.  Without this, the orphanage would not be sustainable and the children would have remained in very different circumstances.  They would also not have the opportunities they currently have.   It has also helped us enable a few local children in our community to buy stationery and be able to go to school.  

In April this year, 10 year old Roshan from Chitwan joined us.  Sadly, his mother who worked as a labourer, died due to an illness.  This left Roshan in the care of his ill father who is unable to work due to kidney problems.  Unable to go to school, Roshan started hanging out with street children until, thankfully, someone in the neighbourhood contacted My sister from Chitwan. Roshan has settled in well and is working hard at school.

Madan is now 18 and lives with his step-sister and family about 5km away.  He visits once a week and sometimes comes to stay.  He has completed his 2 years of various subjects at Higher Education level, during which Computer Science was his main focus.  He went on to do a 3 month Korean language course but ultimately would love to pursue I.T. at University level.

Madan’s younger brother, Sujan, is with 15 now the oldest in the home.

He is in his final year at Secondary school and takes his exams in February, after which he has to wait for 6 months for his results!

All the other children are well and working hard at the local Active Academy school  where, apart from Nepali, all their lessons are taught in English.

Two years ago, Demisha moved from the Montessori nursery school to the Elim Kids Academy.  Dan is also now in uniform and has been going to the same school for the past year.  

Since September, Mariya has been working for a small finance company.  This involves walking from Thamel back to Dhapasi collecting money from shops along the way.

That just leaves us to thank you once again for your support and friendship.  We hope you have a joyful Christmas with your family/friends and wish you the very best for 2015.
